Wright Foods to expand food processing operations in North Carolina

US-based Wright Foods plans to invest $53m over the next five years to expand its food processing and packaging operations in Montgomery County, North Carolina, a move which will create 505 new jobs.

The expansion project was announced by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory and Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker.

Wright Foods is a food processing company that utilises aseptic processing, a technology developed at North Carolina State University, to package its products.

According to the company, this method enhances the shelf life and quality of the product without the use of any preservatives or refrigeration, while saving energy, packaging materials and distribution costs.

Wright Foods president and CEO J. Michael Drozd said that consumers are demanding more nutritious and better tasting foods as well as convenience and affordability.

"This expansion will allow us to grow to meet the needs of consumers," Drozd added.

Wright Foods will receive a performance-based grant of about $1.5m from the One North Carolina Fund, which provides financial assistance through local governments to attract business projects that will accelerate economic activity and create new jobs in the state.

McCrory said: "One of my top priorities is helping existing businesses grow and expand their operations in North Carolina."

Sharon Decker said: "Companies like Wright Foods choose to do business in North Carolina because we provide them with the tools they need to succeed."

Wright Foods is involved in processing fruits and vegetables into packaged juices, broths and other products that do not require refrigeration.
