Müller Dairy completes acquisition of Nom Dairy UK

UK-based Müller Dairy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Theo Müller Group, has completed the acquisition of Nom Dairy UK, as it seeks to bolster its presence in the country’s private-label yoghurt sector.

The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Nom Dairy, the UK arm of Austrian yoghurt maker Nom, was established in 2006, and it operates a yoghurt facility at Donnington Wood, Telford, which has a turnover of £43m per annum.

The company opened the £40m plant in Donnington Wood in 2009.

Nom Dairy UK was previously majority owned by Austria’s Raiffeisen Holding, while Nom held a 15% stake.

The deal is expected to enable Müller to manufacture the yoghurt products, including branded products, at the Telford site under the Müller brand for retailers such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Theo Müller CEO Heiner Kamps said the acquisition underlines the company’s commitment to grow its presence in the UK which, along with Germany and the US, is a core market for Müller.

"We believe that there are strong opportunities in the UK private label yogurt sector and the Telford facility will help us to realise our plans to provide customers with great products in this important market."

Müller UK & Ireland CEO Ronald Kers said that the acquisition will allow the company to increase the range of private label yoghurt products made with milk from British farms, which can in turn reduce the UK’s dependence on imported dairy products.

"We are ambitious for the future and we very much look forward to working with the team at Telford and our customers to realise the significant potential of this facility."

This development builds on Müller’s recent acquisition of milk processor Robert Wiseman Dairies and a chilled desserts facility at Minsterley, Shropshire.

Müller processes and delivers over 30% of the fresh milk consumed in Britain and holds a huge stake in the dairy sector.

The company is currently constructing Britain’s largest butter manufacturing plant at its Market Drayton, Shropshire, facility.
