US Seeks Information on Chemical Behind Kellogg’s Recall

US lawmakers have sought additional information on the chemical reportedly behind the recall of 28 million boxes of Kellogg’s cereals in June this year.

According to a recent letter to Kellogg’s, members sought information on 2-methylnaphthalene, the likely source of a foul taste and smell that prompted the recall.

Members asked Kellogg’s to hand over “all documents relating to any assessments of the health risks posed by 2-methylnaphthalene conducted by, commissioned by, or requested by the company,” by 16 August.

During the recall, Kellogg’s said it noticed “an uncharacteristic off-flavour and smell” from the box liners of its Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks products.

Kellog’s later said it identified elevated levels of hydrocarbons normally found in the paraffin wax and film in the liners.
