Del Monte Foods to Reduce Sodium Content

Del Monte Foods will reduce the sodium content of its branded portfolio of vegetable, tomato and broth products by 20% by 2015.

The company said the move will include its consumer brands Del Monte, S&W, Contadina and College Inn.

Other food makers such as ConAgra Foods, Kraft Foods and Schwan’s Food Service have pledged to reduce sodium levels in their products.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US, about 77% of the average American’s sodium intake comes from processed foods.

Last month Campbell Soup Company said it would reformulate 21 varieties of its condensed soups with reduced sodium content.
