Pepsi India Initiates Water Conservation

PepsiCo’s Indian unit saved 836 million litres of water in 2009, the company said.

The company recharged six billion litres of water and used 5.17 billion litres for beverage production during the year to achieve what it calls “positive water balance”.

The unit claims to be the first sector of the beverage giant to put more water back into the environment than it consumes.

PepsiCo chairman & CEO Indra Nooyi said the Indian model will be replicated in PepsiCo’s other markets which face water scarcity, such as China.

The balance was achieved through direct seeding technology, construction of check-dams, recharging ponds, and rain or roof-water harvesting, according to economictimes.com.

The company has 45 beverage bottling and snacks plants in India.
