Salmonella Contamination Prompts Alfalfa Recall in US

Caldwell Fresh Foods has announced a nationwide recall after 20 people in ten US states were hospitalised due to salmonella contamination of alfalfa sprouts.

According to the Oregon Department of Human Services, which announced the recall, Caldwell’s products may have gone to more than 400 stores in 18 states in the west, midwest and south.

The company said the sprouts were sold at restaurants, delicatessens and retailers including Californian stores such as Wal-Mart, Trader Joe’s, Kings Supermarket, Numero Uno, Cardenas Markets, Gonzales Northgate Markets, Jons Marketplace and Canton Foods.

The products are marketed and made under the Nature’s Choice, California Exotics and Caldwell Fresh Foods brands.

The US Food and Drug Administration is investigating the case.
