Glucosamine Can be Recovered from Food Processing, Says Study

The nutritional values from seafood and beverage processing waste can be extracted, according to the preliminary findings of a project.

The project aims to recover nutritious components such as glucosamine, chitin and chondroitin from seafood waste as well as polyphenols from brewing, UK-based technology development company C-Tech Innovation said.

It also aims to model seafood and brewing waste streams and develop a waste extraction prototype that can be used for the separation of synthetic goods, plastics and metals in a mixed waste stream.

According to the UK Waste and Resource Action Programme, annual food waste in the UK amounts to nearly 18-20 million tons of which about 20% is generated by food processors.

Retailers are believed to generate about 1.6 million tons of waste a year, with food service and restaurants producing another three million tonnes, according to foodproductiondaily.com.
