FDA Urges Consumers to Handle Seafood Safely

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged consumers to handle seafood safely following ten confirmed cases of salmonella contamination linked to raw ahi tuna.

To help avoid infection consumers should wash their hands with soap and warm water before and after handling any raw food and keep the food from coming into contact with other foods.

Utensils and surface areas should be thoroughly cleaned after coming into contact with raw fish.

The federal agency has received notification from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding salmonella serotype paratyphi B infection reported in Hawaii.

The FDA, CDC and state health authorities are working to determine the source of the outbreak.
