FDA Calls for Sodium Reduction

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) intends to work with the food industry, health experts and consumer groups to reduce the amount of salt Americans consume.

The FDA’s initiative in the later part of the year will lead to the first permissible limits on the amount of salt allowed in food products.

Salt levels in spaghetti sauces, breads and other products, making up the $600bn US food and beverage market, will be analysed by the agency.

The FDA, which regulates most processed foods, will be joined by the US Department of Agriculture, which oversees meat and poultry.
