Chinese Meat and Dairy Products Tainted with Antibiotics, Says Study

The regular administration of antibiotics to animals in China has tainted some of the country’s meat and dairy products.

Farmers put erythromycin in feed to prevent the animals from getting sick, Outlook Weekly said quoting a farmer in northern Shaanxi province.

Nearly 400 families in the province involved in the chicken business secretly use the antibiotic, which could increase the number of drug-resistant germs, it was revealed.

Villagers in another area of the province, which has 11 million cows and 60 million poultry, use penicillin as a panacea for almost every disease.

Veterinary science school dean Wang Jinjue said the residue of antibiotics could also affect humans.
