EFSA Finds no Link Between Sugar and Obesity

The European Food Safety Authority has found no link between sugar and obesity to recommend an upper limit for sugar consumption.

The food regulatory body said it found “no clear and consistent association between increased intakes of added sugars and body mass index.”

Its findings are consistent with the 2002 US National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine report that said scientific evidence did not justify setting an upper level for sugars intake.

Sugar Association president and CEO Andy Briscoe said that it was about eating in moderation to control caloric intake and exercising daily.

“If anything, adding a few calories of all-natural sugar has proven to boost consumption of essential vitamins and minerals by making healthy foods taste a bit better,” Briscoe said.

Caloric sweetener consumption is down nearly 10% over the past ten years, according to the USDA.
