Oxoid Develops New Staphylococci Detection Test

Oxoid said it has developed a new test method to detect coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS), a common cause of food poisoning.

The UK-based company said its Brilliance Staph 24 Agar analysis allows the isolation and calculation of CPS levels within 24 hours.

Traditional methods such as Baird-Parker Egg Yolk Tellurite Agar takes about 48 hours to produce a result, Oxoid said.

The test also prevents the growth of non- target organisms which reduces the need for confirmation testing, according to foodqualitynews.

According to EU regulations staphylococci in cheese, milk powder and shellfish is considered dangerous when levels exceed 1x105CFU/g.
