Tulip Food Company agrees to acquire Danish bacon producer Zandbergen

Denmark-based Tulip Food Company (Tulip Food) has agreed to acquire Dutch bacon producer Baconspecialist Zandbergen.

Tulip Food is a subsidiary of meat processing company Danish Crown.

The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed by either of the companies.

Zandbergen is based in Haarlem, the Netherlands, and is engaged in the production of a wide range of bacon products, including pre-cooked, sliced and diced bacon, as well as bacon cubes, bits and flakes.

The company’s bacon products are distributed to retailers, wholesalers and other foodservice outlets across Europe.

Tulip Food CEO Kasper Lenbroch was quoted by Foodbev.com as saying: “With the purchase of Zandbergen, Tulip takes a big leap forward.

“By welcoming Baconspecialist Zandbergen as a new member of the Tulip family, we intensify one of our core competencies.

“We get new capacity and new product opportunities like fried bacon with this very well-managed and family-driven company, which is strong and very popular in the bacon market.

“We will maintain and expand the forces of the company and at the same time ensure that Tulip’s competencies are incorporated to bring mutual benefits.”

Tulip Food Company operates a number of brands such as PåLækker, GØL, and Steff-Houlberg.

The company claims that the acquisition will strengthen its position in the pork segment with an increased product range and production capacity.

Zandbergen co-founder Robert Zandbergen was quoted by the website as saying: “We look forward to becoming part of Tulip Food Company, which we know as a strong and innovative player in the European market for processed meat and which is already well-known for its popular products such as pulled pork, snacking and spare ribs.”
