Tate & Lyle aims 30% reduction in emissions by 2030

Global speciality food ingredients provider Tate & Lyle has unveiled plans to cut Scope 1 and 2 CO₂e emissions by 30% by 2030.

The latest move is part of the company’s new environmental targets and commitments.

As part of this, the company also aims to deliver a 15% absolute reduction in Scope 3 CO₂e emissions.

Tate & Lyle chief executive Nick Hampton said: “There has never been a greater need for businesses to address the climate change crisis.

“One of the key pillars of our purpose of Improving Lives for Generations is to care for our planet and with our new environmental targets and commitments we are taking decisive action to protect our planet’s natural resources for the benefit of future generations.”

The company also aims to eliminate the usage of coal in its operations by 2025 and reduce the usage of water. In addition, it announced that it will beneficially use all its waste while maintaining its support for sustainable agriculture.

Tate & Lyle noted that its new targets and commitments build on the initiatives that it has already taken.

Furthermore, these steps are expected to further enhance the company’s sustainability across its entire value chain.

Tate & Lyle sustainability director Anna Pierce said: “These stretching new targets demonstrate our steadfast commitment to integrating sustainability into our day-to-day business activities, processes and culture.”

In November 2018, Tate & Lyle collaborated with stewardship solutions provider Land O’Lakes SUSTAIN to advance conservation practices on Midwest farms and source sustainable corn.

The collaboration made use of Land O’Lakes SUSTAIN’s interactive on-farm digital platform Truterra Insights Engine designed to help farmers scale their environmental stewardship efforts and assess return-on-investment in real-time, acre-by-acre.
