Sysco acquires two fresh produce firms in Hawaii

US-based food products marketer and distributor Sysco has purchased two Hawaii-based fresh produce wholesalers and distributors, Armstrong Produce and Kula Produce.

Financial details have not been disclosed by the companies involved.

Once this deal is complete, Armstrong Produce and its sister company, Kula Produce, will operate as part of Sysco’s speciality produce company FreshPoint, which is engaged in the distribution of fresh produce across North America.

Established in 1979, Armstrong Produce has wholesaler and distribution operations across Honolulu, Kona and Kahului. Its fresh produce is supplied to a wide range of customers, including local chefs and retailers.

Founded in 1987, Kula Produce sells fruits and vegetables to serve retail, food service, and institutional customers.

The two firms have combined annual revenues of approximately $155m.

Sysco US foodservice operations executive vice president Greg Bertrand said: “Armstrong Produce and Kula Produce have been providing quality service and produce to Hawaii and the Pacific Region since 1979, and we are excited to welcome them to the Sysco family of companies and to FreshPoint.

“Acquiring Armstrong Produce and Kula Produce provides Sysco and FreshPoint with additional direct access to the Hawaiian Islands and increased capacity to expand our produce assortment in the local market.”

FreshPoint stated that it intends to retain the executive leadership team of Armstrong Produce and Kula Produce, as well as existing associates.

Bertrand added: “By leveraging the combined skills of FreshPoint, Armstrong Produce and Kula Produce, we are better positioned to serve our customers.

“This partnership provides an opportunity to broaden our vision to be our customers’ most valued and trusted business partner.”

In May 2018, Sysco expanded its FreshPoint facility in central Florida.
