Hershey commits transition to simpler ingredients in products

Hershey is committing to use simpler ingredients in its chocolate products amid growing concerns from Americans about the quality of products they are consuming.

The company said that starting this year, it plans to use locally produced milk to manufacture its products along with simpler ingredients.

Hershey’s announcement came after Nestle said that it will work towards removing all artificial flavours and colouring from its candies by the end of 2015.

However, Hershey did not mention if it plans on dropping any ingredient because of the new policy.

The company said that it would also make the information about sourcing, manufacturing and labelling available to the consumers, either through packaging, website or new technologies.

The Hershey Company president and CEO John Bilbrey said: "We all want and deserve to know what’s in our food. We will continue to make our great-tasting, high-quality iconic brands that people know and love.

"We also will share more information about what goes into our products in ways that are easy to understand and access."

The company will also work towards responsible sourcing of sustainable ingredients through cooperation with suppliers.

In 2015, Hershey plans to transition some of its best known products including Hershey’s Kisses Milk Chocolates and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars to simpler ingredients.

The company said in a statement: "The Hershey Company will continue updating its website to serve as a resource for information from a full ingredient glossary to in-depth articles about ingredients consumers want to know about and profiles of the suppliers we work with each and every day."
