Frutarom’s EFLA HyperPure line helps manufacturers meet new PAH regulations in EU

Frutarom Health BU has introduced the EFLA HyperPure natural ingredients line, which is claimed to help manufacturers meet new EU regulations that seek to prevent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other contaminants in food supplements.

Recently, the EU published the 2015/1933 PAH regulation, which defined the maximum permisable levels of PAHs in food supplements.

This regulation was brought in after high levels of PAHs were found in some food supplements containing or sourced from botanical ingredients.

Frutarom Health’s EFLA HyperPure line includes a range of extracts, claimed to be produced using proprietary technology.

These extracts have been drawn from raw materials that are often found to be vulnerable to PAH contamination.

Use of proprietary HyperPure technology eliminates these contaminants and helps manufacturers meet new PAH regulations, claims the company.

Frutarom Health CSO Matthias H Kreuter said: "Many botanical ingredients could have difficulty complying with this new regulation.

"Until now, only a few techniques enabling the removal of contaminants are available, for example application of supercritical CO2, activated charcoal, and hexane.

"But these techniques involve non-selective processes that can cause the loss of active ingredients and can be harmful to the environment or pose a risk of toxicity."

EFLA HyperPure, which is the company’s patented process technology, enables selective removal of unwanted contaminants, including pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and unsaturated fatty acids that undergo rapid peroxidation, degrading other ingredients and generating unwanted by-products such as heptanol.
