US food industry sees a rise of 17.4% in deal activity in April 2019

The US food industry saw a rise of 17.4% in overall deal activity during April 2019, when compared with the last 12-month average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 27 deals worth $145.65m were announced in April 2019, compared to the 12-month average of 23 deals.

M&A was the leading category in the month in terms of volume with 13 deals which accounted for 48.2% of all deals.

In second place was venture financing with ten deals, followed by private equity with four transactions, respectively accounting for 37.04% and 14.8% of overall deal activity in the country’s food industry during the month.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading deal category in the US food industry with total deals worth $124.65m, while venture financing deals totalled $21m.

US food industry deals in April 2019: Top deals

The top three food industry deals accounted for 94.4% of the overall value during April 2019.

The combined value of the top three food industry deals stood at $137.5m, against the overall value of $145.65m recorded for the month. The top announced US food industry deal tracked by GlobalData in April 2019 was Karl Handelsman and Rou Mei Capital’s $100m venture financing of Mammuty.

In second place was the $21m acquisition of Three Limes by Oisix ra daichi and in third place was Meaningful Partners, Murano Group and Pendyne Capital’s $16.5m venture financing of Stryve Foods.

This analysis considers only announced and completed deals from the GlobalData financial deals database and excludes all terminated and rumoured deals. Country and industry are defined according to the headquarters and dominant industry of the target firm. The term ‘acquisition’ refers to both completed deals and those in the bidding stage.
