North America’s food industry sees a rise of 19.2% in deal activity in April 2019

North America’s food industry saw a rise of 19.2% in deal activity during April 2019, when compared with the last 12-month average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 31 food industry deals worth $548.9m were announced for the region in April 2019, against the 12-month average of 26 deals.

Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in April 2019 with 17 transactions, representing a 54.8% share for the region.

In second place was venture financing with ten deals, followed by private equity deals with four transactions, respectively capturing a 32.3% and 12.9% share of the overall deal activity for the month.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading category in North America’s food industry with $424.25m, while venture financing deals totalled $124.65m.

North America food industry deals in April 2019: Top deals

The top five food deals accounted for 98.5% of the overall value during April 2019.

The combined value of the top five food deals stood at $540.75m, against the overall value of $548.9m recorded for the month. The top announced food deal tracked by GlobalData in April 2019 was CPF Canada Holdings’ $371.75m acquisition of Hylife.

In second place was the $100m venture financing of Mammuty by Karl Handelsman and Rou Mei Capital and in third place was Organic Flower Investments Group’s $31.49m stake acquisition of The Edibles and Infusions.

The $21m acquisition of Three Limes by Oisix ra daichi and Meaningful Partners, Murano Group and Pendyne Capital’s venture financing of Stryve Foods for $16.5m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

This analysis considers only announced and completed deals from the GlobalData financial deals database and excludes all terminated and rumoured deals.
