Food industry M&A deals total $4.8bn globally in May 2021

Total food industry M&A deals worth $4.8bn were announced globally in May 2021, led by Mondelez International’s $2bn acquisition of Chipita, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

The value marked an increase of 157.5% over the previous month of $1.88bn and a rise of 236.1% when compared with the last 12-month average, which stood at $1.44bn.

Comparing M&A deals value in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position, with total announced deals in the period worth $2.18bn. At the country level, the Greece topped the list in terms of deal value at $2bn.

In terms of volumes, Europe emerged as the top region for food industry M&A deals globally, followed by North America and then Asia-Pacific.

The top country in terms of M&A deals activity in May 2021 was the US with eight deals, followed by the UK with four and Saudi Arabia with two.

In 2021, as of May, food M&A deals worth $8bn were announced globally, marking an increase of 1.9% year on year.

The combined value of the top five food M&A deals stood at $2.28bn, against the overall value of $4.8bn recorded for the month.
