Food industry M&A deals in Q3 2020 total $6.7bn globally

Total food industry M&A deals in Q3 2020 worth $6.7bn were announced globally, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

The value marked an increase of 122.1% over the previous quarter and a rise of 9.7% when compared with the last four-quarter average, which stood at $6.11bn.

Comparing deals value in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position, with total announced deals in the period worth $3.21bn. At the country level, the US topped the list in terms of deal value at $3.21bn.

In terms of volumes, Asia-Pacific emerged as the top region for food industry M&A deals globally, followed by Europe and then North America.

The top country in terms of M&A deals activity in Q3 2020 was the US with 24 deals, followed by Australia with seven and Japan with seven.

In 2020, as of the end of Q3 2020, food M&A deals worth $17.09bn were announced globally, marking an increase of 13.5% year on year.

The top five food industry M&A deals accounted for 69.3% of the overall value during Q3 2020.

The combined value of the top five food M&A deals stood at $4.64bn, against the overall value of $6.7bn recorded for the month.

1) Groupe Lactalis’ $3.2bn asset transaction with The Kraft Heinz

2) The $782.79m asset transaction with Kerry Group by Kerry Co-Operative Creameries

3) Woolworths Group's $399.4m acquisition of PFD Food Services

4) The $150m acquisition of Changshouhua FoodLimited by SanXing Trade

5) Orkla's acquisition of Eastern Condiments for $112.68m.
