Total food industry M&A deals in Q1 2020 worth $4.23bn were announced globally, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

The value marked a decrease of 49.4% over the previous quarter and a drop of 27.8% when compared with the last four-quarter average, which stood at $5.86bn.

Comparing deals value in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position, with total announced deals in the period worth $1.9bn. At the country level, Canada topped the list in terms of deal value at $1.2bn.

In terms of volumes, North America emerged as the top region for food industry M&A deals globally, followed by Asia-Pacific and then Europe.

The top country in terms of M&A deals activity in Q1 2020 was the US with 29 deals, followed by Japan with seven and Canada with five.

In 2020, as of the end of Q1 2020, food M&A deals worth $4.23bn were announced globally, marking a decrease of 34.4% year on year.

The combined value of the top five food M&A deals stood at $3.47bn, against the overall value of $4.23bn recorded for the month.

2) The $825.86m acquisition of Glycom by Royal DSM

4) The $433m asset transaction with Dean Foods by Dairy Farmers of America

5) Hormel Foods’ acquisition of Sadler’s Smokehouse for $270m.
