Food industry deals in Q1 2019 total $8.04bn globally

Total food industry deals for Q1 2019 worth $8.04bn were announced globally, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

The value marked a decrease of 25.2% over the previous quarter and a drop of 33.6% when compared with the last four-quarter average of $12.12bn.

In terms of number of deals, the sector saw a rise of 7.7% over the last four-quarter average with 195 deals against the average of 181 deals.

In value terms, North America led the activity with deals worth $3.57bn.

Food industry deals in Q1 2019: Top deals

The top five food deals accounted for 57.1% of the overall value during Q1 2019.

The combined value of the top five food deals stood at $4.59bn, against the overall value of $8.04bn recorded for the quarter. The top announced food deal tracked by GlobalData in Q1 2019 was Ferrero International’s $1.3bn asset transaction with Kellogg.

In second place was the $1.27bn acquisition of Dairy Crest Group by Saputo Dairy and in third place was MBK Partners’s $1bn private equity deal with Godiva Chocolatier.

The $588m acquisition of Westland Co-operative Dairy by Hongkong Jingang Trade Holding Co and MilcoProprietary’s acquisition of Clover Industries for $432.24m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

This analysis considers only announced and completed deals from the GlobalData financial deals database and excludes all terminated and rumoured deals. Country and industry are defined according to the headquarters and dominant industry of the target firm. The term ‘acquisition’ refers to both completed deals and those in the bidding stage.
