Food industry cross border deals total $4.3bn globally in May 2021

Total food industry cross border deals worth $4.3bn were announced globally for May 2021, with the $2bn acquisition of Chipita being the sector’s biggest investment, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

The value marked an increase of 176.6% over the previous month of $1.54bn and a rise of 345% when compared with the last 12-month average of $957.4m.

In terms of number of cross border deals, the sector saw a rise of 33.33% with 28 deals in May 2021 when compared to the last 12-month average of 21 deals.

In value terms, Europe led the activity with cross border deals worth $2.24bn in May 2021.

The top five cross border deals accounted for 52.8% of the overall value during May 2021.

The combined value of the top five cross border deals stood at $2.25bn, against the overall value of $4.3bn recorded for the month.

1) Mondelez International’s $2bn acquisition of Chipita

2) The $155.03m acquisition of Bute Island Foods and Wisconsin Specialty Protein by Saputo

3) D1 Capital Partners, Drake Management, Maveron and Palm Tree Crew Investments’ $40m acquisition of Daring Foods

4) The $31.05m venture financing deal of Zhong Xuegao Foods (Shanghai) by H Capital – US, Tiantu Investments, Wanwu Capital and Yuansheng Capital

5) Kervan International’s venture financing deal with PWC Odra and Zaklady Przemyslu Cukierniczego Otmuchow for $23.04m.
