Europe’s food industry saw a rise of 122.22% in cross border deal activity during May 2021, when compared with the last 12-month average, led by Mondelez International’s $2bn acquisition of Chipita, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

 

A total of 20 food industry cross border deals worth $2.2bn were announced for the region in May 2021, against the 12-month average of nine deals.

Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in May 2021 with 14 transactions, representing a 70% share for the region.

In second place was venture financing with four deals, followed by private equity deals with two transactions, respectively capturing a 20% and 10% share of the overall cross border deal activity for the month.

In terms of value of cross border deals, M&A was the leading category in Europe’s food industry with $2.18bn, followed by venture financing deals totalled $60.95m.

The top five food cross border deals accounted for 99.5% of the overall value during May 2021.

The combined value of the top five food cross border deals stood at $2.23bn, against the overall value of $2.2bn recorded for the month.

1) Mondelez International’s $2bn acquisition of Chipita

2) The $155.03m acquisition deal with Bute Island Foods and Wisconsin Specialty Protein by Saputo

3) D1 Capital Partners, Drake Management, Maveron and Palm Tree Crew Investments’ $40m venture financing of Daring Foods

4) The $23.04m acquisition of PWC Odra and Zaklady Przemyslu Cukierniczego Otmuchow by Kervan International

5) Circleup Growth Partners, Collaborative Fund, Pentland Ventures and S2G Ventures’ venture financing of Gem Healthcare for $10.5m.
