The China International Import Food Expo (CIPFE) is held in September each year in Guangzhou.
This annual event represents one of the largest gatherings of imported food suppliers in Southern China. In recent years, demand for imported food, particularly in healthcare, has continued to grow rapidly. According to an estimation from the Association of Food Industry, China will be the biggest importer of food products in the world by 2018. The market value is expected to total 480 billion RMB by that time.
Imported food products have maintained a good reputation for taste, packaging, diversity, and safety as food security problems alarm Chinese customers and they become more sensitive to both the quality and healthiness of food products.
In a previous edition of CIPFE, imported food labelled ‘health’, ‘natural’, ‘green’, or ‘organic’ became more attractive to the Chinese market, including products such as baby food; health products; dietary supplements; organic oil; black rice of the Korean Organic Agriculture Association; mineral water of exhibitors from Czech, Bulgarian, and other European countries; green organic fruit and vegetable products from Armenia; and New Zealand’s natural Manuka honey. High-quality imported healthcare food products, such as Culturelle, Reaps, and Sinolife United, became popular on the show.
Demand of healthcare food increases particularly among the younger generation. In China, young people are becoming the main force of imported food consumption, as they seem to adapt to their tastes very well and they are willing to spend more on quality life. There is greater diversity of healthcare food products dedicated to the young generation, such as products for recuperation of sub-healthy and products for skin tightening.
For a taste of this rapidly growing market, you need look no further than the annual gathering of global taste in Guangzhou this September.
