Kan-Pak produces and packages dairy products, ice cream and coffee mixes, and nutritional beverages. In 2007 authorities required Kan-Pak to install a pretreatment system at its facility, to comply with local ordinances and meet limits for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), and fats, oil and grease (FOG).
During the summer of 2007 the Kan-Pak facility installed a pretreatment system designed to remove BOD and TSS from its discharge. The biological process included in the original pretreatment system is a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). The basic idea behind the MBBR is to have a continuously operating, non-cloggable biofilm reactor with low head-loss and with high specific biofilm surface. The MBBR installed was aerobic and used biofilm carriers with a specific surface area of 404m²/m³.
