Covid-19 has helped Scottish bakers think outside the pantry box

Scottish bakers are thinking outside the pantry box to help consumers get their share of baked comforting treats. A lot of these bakers are independent family-owned businesses, which are at higher-risk from the impacts of Covid-19. Therefore, they are pushed to find innovative ways to reach consumers to stay afloat. Scottish bakeries are doing more deliveries and are selling raw ingredients to help consumers stay well stocked during lockdown. This will lead to better relationships within local communities, likely reinforcing consumers’ desire to shop locally.

According to GlobalData’s Global Covid-19 Consumer survey results we can see that 61% of consumers always/often look for products that feel trustworthy and risk-free when shopping during the current situation. This shows that product safety is a high-priority in the FMCG sector at the moment and these precautious consumer behaviors are likely to continue even once the pandemic settles. This may lead to a surge in local businesses as they are perceived by many customers to be safer due to less air miles and human contact being involved operationally.

Such obsession with hygiene may lead to new hygiene and quality standards being made in order to gain consumers trust and confidence. Consumers are stocking up on essentials such as bread and baking ingredients to prevent having to go outside unnecessarily due to the possibility of contracting COVID-19. This is having an impact on supply chains; supply is not meeting current consumer demand and larger corporations such as Morrison’s are starting to sell their own industrial flour to help consumers. The more organisations that go above and beyond to help struggling consumers, the stronger their relationship with their customers will become.
