Corbion aims to cut product-related carbon emissions by 2030

Dutch food ingredient firm Corbion has unveiled its plan to cut one-third of its product-related carbon emissions by 2030.

As part of its carbon footprint reduction target, the supplier of biobased food and biochemical ingredients intends to reduce carbon emissions related to key raw materials, as well as energy and transport by 33% per tonne of product by 2030.

Corbion CEO Olivier Rigaud said: “As a sustainable ingredients company, Corbion is already deeply involved in developing sustainable solutions that help our customers shrink their carbon footprint by reducing food waste and their use of fossil-based chemicals.

“But we must do more. We must all become leaders in climate action, and do all we can to inspire each other to make a sustainable difference.”

The company noted that its proposed carbon reduction target was approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) following a validation process.

Corbion is the 276th company to receive SBTi approval for its target.

Launched in 2015, SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

SBTi encourages companies worldwide to set science-based targets to limit GHG emissions, enabling them to transition to a low-carbon economy.

To meet its carbon reduction target, the Dutch firm has created a team of experts to develop a roadmap to achieve certain key actions, including transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2030, implementing energy-saving programmes at its facilities, as well as setting up a research and development programme.

It also intends to partners with raw material suppliers to jointly minimise carbon emissions.

Rigaud further added: “The world’s future depends on the commitments we make today and on the ways we honour them. At Corbion, we focus our business on some of the biggest challenges confronting our planet by contributing to a circular, low-carbon economy.

“We know that to overcome those challenges, we must commit ourselves to achieve stretch goals.”

In September this year, British soft drinks producer Britvic signed a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission.
