Hong Kong Finds Food Safety Report Satisfactory

Most of the food samples tested by the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety in December have come up with satisfactory results, the city’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said.

Of the surveyed 6,100 samples, 12 were reported unsatisfactory, it said.

Two samples of the fresh beef tested positive for sulphur dioxide, which Hong Kong does not permit in fresh meat and one sample of cooked chicken tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus.

Two of the 700 tests of aquatic products were found with high mercury in a sample of frozen swordfish while one frozen shrimp sample was reported with residues of the veterinary drug AOZ.

The centre did 5,100 chemical tests, 900 microbiological tests, and 100 tests for radioactivity and found 99.9% of the 3,400 fruit and vegetable samples safe to consume.
