Economic Downturn Continues to Impact Meat Consumption, says Study

The economic downturn is continuing to affect how US consumers purchase meat, a new report says.

A joint study by the American Meat Institute and the Food Marketing Institute found that nearly 62% of consumers who saw a drop in income altered their meat shopping, with many favouring cheaper cuts.

However, increases in home-cooked meals did lead to an increase in meat purchases at supermarkets and other retail outlets, the report said.

The study, which details the findings of a national online poll of 1,174 consumers, was conducted in November 2009.
