US Poultry Producers to Stop Chlorine Treatment

US producers have agreed to stop using chlorine treatments in poultry products to allow them resume Russian exports, an official said.

Russia’s Federal Consumer Protection Service head Gennady Onishchenko said US firms are working to give up treating poultry with chlorine to resume exports, according to themoscowtimes.com

Russia would start working with some producers after they provide official confirmation that they would supply chlorine-free poultry, Onishchenko said.

US poultry imports were banned in Russia on 1 January following a decision by US producers to treat poultry with chlorine – a production method used by many US producers.

According to an estimate, poultry producers in 38 US states annually export $600-700m-worth of products to Russia.
