Doctors Urge to Ban Trans Fats from UK Food Items

Doctors have urged the UK Government to ban the use of trans fats in the manufacturing of food items.

A reduction in the consumption of industrial trans fatty acids by 1% of total energy intake is predicted to prevent 11,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths annually in England, two doctors from Harvard Medical School said.

Trans fats, used to make deep-fried foods, cakes, biscuit and margarine pose a threat to health, according to an article in the British Medical Journal.

Trans fats are formed when liquid vegetable oil is turned into solid fat in a high-temperature process called hydrogenation and is used to extend a product’s shelf life.
