EU Committee Exclude Cloned Animals from Food Bill

Foodstuffs from cloned animals must be excluded from draft legislation on ‘novel foods’, Environment Committee Members of the European Parliament have announced.

The committee also said food produced from nanotechnology processes should be assessed properly before being approved for use and labelled on packaging, according to foodproductiondaily.com.

The latest decision by lawmakers follows a position adopted by the European Council in mid-March to include produce from clones in the proposed amendment.

Novel foods are those which have not been consumed to any significant degree in the EU before May 1997.
