Canada Reviews Food Law

The Canadian Government is reviewing its food regulations after consumer groups urged the government not to alter its food labelling rules.

The government’s review, which will decide the percentage of Canada-produced ingredients in a product to obtain ”product of Canada” and “made in Canada” status, is expected to be completed by the end of June.

New rules announced two years ago require products to contain at least 98% Canadian ingredients in order to be considered a “product of Canada.”

Food processors across the country complained the rule is impossible to comply for their cost-effectiveness as they have to import some ingredients not available in Canada.

The federal government is reviewing the regulations and floating the idea of exempting sugar, salt and vinegar from the rules.
