Siberoni recalls meat and poultry ravioli products in US

Siberoni, based in Portland, Oregon, US, is recalling 169,655lbs of raw and frozen meat and poultry ‘pelmeni’ (Eastern European-style ravioli products), as they were manufactured without the benefit of inspection, the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced.

The products subject to recall include 1lb packs, in 40lb cases, of ‘Siberoni’ brand Chicken Pelmeni, Beef Pelmeni and Beef and Pork Pelmeni.

These products feature the establishment number ‘33788’ or ‘P-33788’ inside a USDA mark of inspection.

The recalled products were produced prior to 6 September 2013 and were sold directly from the company’s storefront and, through a distributor, to retail outlets in Oregon and Washington state.

FSIS identified the problem during an investigation which showed that the company had produced products while under suspension.

Further investigation revealed that more products had been produced prior to the suspension period, however, without benefit of inspection.

FSIS has received no consumer complaints of illnesses associated with these products, and has advised those concerned about illness to contact a healthcare provider.

There were no child nutrition, Department of Defense, or internet/catalog sales of the product, the agency said.

Classified as Class I, the recall indicates a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product could cause serious, adverse health consequences.

FSIS regularly conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
